On June 14, the Science Tokyo (Science and Engineering) Campus Visit 2026 welcomed many high school students, technical college students, recent graduates, and parents. As part of the event, ELSI hosted a laboratory open house titled “The Mystery of the Origin of Life,” led by Professor Ryuhei Nakamura. Approximately 30 visitors, including parents, attended the session.
The event opened with introductory remarks from Professor Nakamura. ELSI graduate student Shunto Harada, a second-year Ph.D. student in the Nakamura Laboratory, then served as moderator. He introduced the laboratory’s research on the origins of life, which investigates how energy generated by hydrothermal vents and naturally occurring mineral structures may have contributed to the emergence of life on Earth. In addition, in the laboratory, with the support of Professor Nakamura and Harada, Lu Yanjing (a second-year master’s student) and Genki Nakagawa (a first-year master’s student) from the Nakamura Laboratory conducted experimental demonstrations and provided explanations. Yang Zening, a second-year doctoral student in the Nakamura Laboratory, photographed the event.
